Valley Forge Chorus Is Seeking A Music Director!


Valley Forge Chorus is seeking a Music Director. This position is responsible for developing and leading the musical and artistic performance of Valley Forge Chorus, in collaboration with our Music Team, in a way that is consistent with our mission and core values.

A chapter of Sweet Adelines International, Valley Forge Chorus has been entertaining audiences in the greater Philadelphia area for over 54 years with our energetic a cappella harmonies. We are a premier women’s a cappella ensemble committed to achieving musical excellence in competition and performance. We believe in empowering every member to realize her potential as a skilled and confident performer, through continuing education and opportunities to compete and perform.

Valley Forge Chorus is a high-performing competitive chorus. Our achievements include:

  • 2019 Region 19 Division A Chorus Champions
  • 2017 Region 19 Chorus Champions
  • Qualified to compete at the Sweet Adelines International Competition in 2016 and 2018, placing 25th and 22nd, respectively
  • Consistently ranked among the top 5 choruses at Region 19 competition since 2011
  • Appearances at Harmony Classic Division AA mid-size chorus competition in 2003 (1st place) and 2012 (3rd place and Most Entertaining)
  • 1983 International Chorus Champions

The Chorus has appeared on televised broadcasts, performed in a variety of venues, and actively seeks out opportunities within our local communities to entertain and educate audiences in the Barbershop art form.


  • Frontline Musical Director of Valley Forge Chorus
  • Currently, rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 10:30PM; flexibility is expected to accommodate performances, extra rehearsals, and events in addition to weekly rehearsal
  • Compensation based on experience and education
  • Supervised by Board of Directors


  • Promote the chorus and its mission
  • Represent the chorus positively in the Sweet Adelines and wider community
  • Network with organizations, music directors, and community groups to increase the visibility of the chorus

Design, coordinate, and direct musical product

  • Develop short term and long term musical plans for the chorus in collaboration with the Music Team and Board of Directors
  • Plan and execute all chorus rehearsals
  • Prepare chorus for regional and international competitions
  • Direct all public performances of the chorus or delegate to an assistant director, when necessary
  • Audition prospective members to determine voice-placement or appoint suitable music committee member
  • Approve all performance related decisions including but not limited to choreography, costuming and make-up
  • Collaborate with Show Chair and committee in planning chorus shows
  • Attend all Music Team meetings and take responsibility for appointing and training musical leadership
  • In collaboration with Music Team, select repertoire, outside coaches and choreographers

Support the chorus’s educational goals

  • Commit to continuing education in the barbershop art form, through observation, personal study, and attendance at regional and international music schools and meetings
  • Foster development of aspiring quartets, directors, and arrangers in the chorus

Collaborate with the chorus administrative leadership

  • Attend Board of Director meetings and submit reports as required
  • Collaborate with Board of Directors regarding chorus calendar and expenditures
  • Provide support to chorus committees

The Music Director should be a well-organized, dependable, and strong leader whose creativity and musical skills will advance the Valley Forge Chorus to the next level. An ideal candidate has:

  • Choral directing experience
  • Understanding of barbershop art form
  • Foundation in vocal pedagogy and ability to demonstrate effectively
  • Strong desire to advance the chorus competitively within Sweet Adelines International
  • Skill in developing and directing stage productions
  • Inclusive and welcoming to all
  • Positive attitude
  • Artistic, creative, innovative, out-of-the-box thinker
  • Genuinely approachable with excellent communication skills
  • Able to inspire singers to reach high standards using positive feedback
